Lemnos is situated in the North East Aegean Sea and is largely untouched by modern tourism. It has a unique and understated appeal resting on a gently undulating landscape dotted with little farms and a coastline graced with fine beaches. The capital is Myrina, built in the 12th or 13th century BC and is dominated by an impressive Venetian castle. The headland and castle straddles the two bays of Myrina, belonging to the town’s Greek and Turkish quarters. There are plenty of charming shops which are known for their classical pottery, wood carvings, local woven fabrics and embroidery - the traditional folk art of the island. The island offers several classical sites, including the most ancient Neolithic colonisation in the Aegean - the city of Poliochni, where excavations have revealed a close relationship with the ancient city of Troy.
